Dr. Gary A. McGaha, Ph. D.

Dr. Gary McGaha is from Rienzi, Mississippi, a small community in the
Northeastern tip of Mississippi. He started his educational journey from his birthplace and graduated from Easom High School in Corinth, Mississippi. He entered Mississippi Valley State University the same year on a music scholarship and graduated magna cum laude. He received the Master of Arts Degree from Bowling Green State University and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Mississippi.

Dr. McGaha worked as a senior level administrator at Kentucky State University (KSU). While at KSU, he served as the Administrative Assistant to the President, as Chair of the Department of Political Science and History and as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. McGaha accepted an invitation from Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., the founding President of Morehouse School of Medicine, to serve as his Executive Assistant, and assist with the development of the Medical School.

Dr. McGaha left the Medical School in November of 1993 to come to Atlanta
Metropolitan College (AMC) to chair the Division of Social Sciences. He left AMC in 2002 to become the Dean of Academic Services for the Dunwoody Campus and the Alpharetta Site of Georgia Perimeter College. He returned to AMC in Mid-August of 2006 to become the Vice President for Academic Affairs and was named Interim President in November of 2006 and appointed as the permanent President November 13, 2007. Under his leadership, the enrollment has increased by 85% since fall 2006. The college was granted baccalaureate degree status by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents May 10, 2011 and the name of the institution was changed to Atlanta Metropolitan State College May 9, 2012.

Dr. McGaha is active in his church and in the community. He is a Deacon at
Greenforest Community Baptist Church; a member of the 2017 Leadership Atlanta Class; the Board of Advisors for the Metro Atlanta Chamber; the Board of Directors of the Airport Area Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Regional Educational Service Agency (Metro RESA) and the Board of Directors of the Southern Association of Colleges with Associate Degrees. He is married to Juliette Wilkinson McGaha and he has two daughters and two sons
